January Meeting Reminder and Upcoming Events

PCD Meeting reminder for this Thursday Jan. 13th @ 7 pm @ Headquarters

We are pleased to have Janet Fultz the director of Payne County Youth Services speaking about the organization and its involvement with the youth in our community.

We are all dealing with a lot of emotions from the horrific shooting in AZ this past weekend. I know that all of our hearts are with the victims and their families. I am struggling that as much as I fear these things can happen that it is a reality. I am hopeful our country finds a way to evaluate some of the issues that played a factor in this tragedy. There is the mental health issue, the gun rights laws, and the vitriol political rhetoric that is an everyday thing. I would like to encourage my fellow Democrats to use this time to find a way to give back in our community and be active in the Democratic process.

Here are a few opportunities to join your fellow Americans.

  • We have a serious problem in this country for caring for the mentally ill and their health concerns or access to mental health care. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) chapter for the Stillwater area meets on the first Thursday of every month, at 7:00 p.m., in the First Presbyterian Church’s library. This chapter also conducts courses on occasion. NAMI Stillwater would be delighted to welcome interested participants in seeking to improve mental health in Oklahoma.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday January 17th Join the celebration at 6pm march from the Stillwater Public Library to Mt. Zion Baptist Church where the program with speaker Dr. Zola Drain and various choirs will begin at 7pm at Mt. Zion Church. PCDs will have a group attending hope you can come out and join us. Dr. King said: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness, in a descending spiral of destruction…The chain reaction of evil–hate begetting hate, wars producing more wars–must be broken, or we shall be plunged into the darkness of annihilation.”
  • Legislator’s reception January 18th from 5-7pm at the Stillwater Public Library auditorium. State Sen. Halligan, R-Stillwater, Reps. Lee Denney, R-Cushing, and Cory Williams, D-Stillwater, are scheduled to attend. City, school & county elected officials and staff also invited. It is a great way to participate in your government.

I hope you can join us on Thursday!

Angela Spotts, Chairwoman Payne County Democrats
