Please join us Thursday, Feb. 9, to watch the 2011 Academy Award winner for Best Documentary Feature, INSIDE JOB.

This is the first film to expose the shocking truth behind the economic crisis of 2008. The global financial meltdown, at a cost of over $20 trillion, resulted in millions of people losing their homes and jobs. Through extensive research and interviews with major financial insiders, politicians and journalists,INSIDE JOB traces the rise of a rogue industry and unveils the corrosive relationships which have corrupted politics, regulation and academia.

Admission and refreshments are free. Doors open at 6:30pm. There will be a short meeting and the feature will begin by 7:05pm

Payne County Democratic Headquarters is located at 302 N. Main, Stillwater (Next to Hastings).

Social this Friday

Our regular biweekly social is scheduled for this Friday, January 20th starting at 5 p.m.

This is an opportunity to commune with fellow Democrats and to talk about the first election of the new year coming on February 14, 2012. Coincidentally, if you haven’t registered to vote by by the time the social starts this Friday, you’ll have to sit this one out as January 20th, according to the Payne County Election Board, is the last day to register to vote in this particular election.

The Valentine’s day special primary election is the first of half a dozen elections this year that will help shape the future of our city, county, state and country. It will feature Democrats Noel Bagwell and Bobby Farley facing off for the party nomination to compete in the special general election on April 3, 2012. In addition, the February 14th election will include a county question to extend the three-eighths percent sale tax that was first approved by voters in 1998. Without this sales tax, our roads and county infrastructure will fall apart and us with them.

So, please join us for our biweekly Friday social at Headquarters! It’s a great time to unwind from the week, get to know your fellow Dems and to help us figure out how we’re going to shape our future. Bring food, drink, a friend, or just yourself!

Director of The Peace House To Speak at PCD January 12th Meeting

Director Nathaniel Batchelder of the The Peace House will be the guest speaker, Thursday, January 12 at 7:00pm at the Payne County Democratic Headquarters at 302 North Main in Stillwater, OK. The Peace House is a center for education and non-violent action on issues relating to human rights, economic justice, environmental sustainability, and nonviolence.

The Peace House, under the leadership of Director Nathaniel Batchelder, is an education and advocacy center for a wide variety of justice and peace issues, including human rights, economic justice, environmental sustainability, nonviolence, and peace. The Oklahoma Peace Strategy Newspaper has been in publication since 1986.
Regular and frequent letters to the editor, Op-Ed pieces, and editorials published in the Daily Oklahoman, smaller newspapers around the state, and national publications have made Director Nathanial “Batch” Batchelder and the Peace House widely known and recognized.

During the 1980s, Peace House work centered around the nuclear arms race and US involvement in the civil strife in Central America. Through the 1990s, Peace House work expanded to include hunger and poverty advocacy through RESULTS and Bread For the World. Civil Rights continued to be a focus as Batch worked with the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Holiday Coalition, the Latino Community Development Organization, Native American Indian groups, and emerging gay rights groups.

The Peace House developed and maintains a strong relationship with “Pastors For Peace” which annually sends mission caravans of humanitarian aid to Nicaragua, Cuba, and the Zapatista movement in Mexico. The Peace House is affiliated with numerous national groups, including PEACE ACTION, but is funded entirely through contributions from individuals and a small number of organizations and houses of worship.

Batch’s work for human rights, including founding and chairing for ten years the Central Oklahoma Human Rights Alliance (COHRA), earned for him the Oklahoma Human Rights Commission’s annual human rights award in December, 2007.

With Conna Wilkinson, Batch and the Peace House have founded the Peace Education Institute which generates public education programs for people of all ages, and summer peace camps for children and youths. While the Peace House has 501(c)4 status, permitting advocacy and lobbying on political issues, the Peace Education Institute may receive tax-deductible contributions, serving the educational missions of both institutions.

Please join us at Jack and Billie Hesser’s as we celebrate the holidays and the start of a new year! Beans and cornbread will be provided, so if you have a dish that you’d like to share, please bring it along and share the joy! There will be a silent auction, and we’ve been told that Jack will be breaking out his water balloon shoot this year.

So please join us at Starr Valley Ranch. Located at 4101 E Lakeview Road. Those of you in Stillwater would take a right on Lakeview and drive about 2 and a half miles east of Perkins Rd.

Occupy Stillwater Meeting

Hello all,

The Occupy Stillwater Group will have a meeting this Wednesday at 6pm at the courthouse. The session will inform anyone who would like to attend about the upcoming events and standing of Occupy Stillwater. Keith Smith, a member of Occupy Stillwater, came to the Payne County Dems this evening to give the Democrats more information about their movement. Smith explained that Americans are exhausted from corporations draining our economy and, as a result, our people deprived of jobs.

If you are able to attend, please come and help out the individuals of Occupy Stillwater!
